Tooth and periodontal diseases, such as caries, defects, and periodontitis, affect billions of people worldwide and remain major clinical and socio-economic burdens. When poorly treated, they frequently lead to tooth loss.
Regenerative dentistry is emerging as a promising alternative, combining tissue engineering, stem cell biology, and biophysical stimulation to restore oral health.
In a recent review published in Cells, iBB researchers Rúben Pires, Mafalda Santos, Filipe Miguel, Cláudia Lobato da Silva, and João Carlos Silva examined how oral tissue-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (OMSCs) respond to electrical stimulation (ES), a biophysical cue known to influence cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation.
