i4HB

Acronym i4HB Title Institute for Health and Bioeconomy Summary

The Institute for Health and Bioeconomy (i4HB) is a strategic partnership between 3 leading RUs (Research Units): iBB – Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (IST, University of Lisbon), UCIBIO – Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit (NOVA University of Lisbon and University of Porto), and INESC-MN (Institute for Systems Engineering and Computers – Microsystems and Nanotechnologies – a non-profit institute); anchored in strong scientific and technological competences in Health and Bioeconomy, and committed to making a difference and leveraging National and International policies in these emerging priority areas. The vision of i4HB is aligned with three strategic objectives: (1) to promote and ensure scientific employment, actively supporting the advanced training of excellent human resources (HR) and fostering the attraction and retention of talent in Portugal; (2) to prioritize the internationalization of R&D and exploitation activities through the increase and diversification of international and private funding sources; (3) to reinforce excellence and impact in R&D through strong collaborations and strategic partnerships with the private sector, public institutions, in continuous support of public policies. To fulfill these objectives, the i4HB implementation plan defined three axes of action – Human Resources, Institutions, and Activities. The i4HB HR strategy aims at the strengthening and recruitment of highly qualified staff, with the offer of 25 new positions in areas aligned with the 4 Thematic Lines: Platforms for Drug Development and Discovery (TL1); Advanced Diagnostics and Therapies (TL2); Human Health and Environmental Safety (TL3); and Valorization of Bio-resources and Production of Bioproducts (TL4). Careers at i4HB are managed by a Careers Council, with Institutional commitment and vision to promote excellence and career plans. Recruitment will adopt transparent, fair, international, and competitive hiring schemes, based on merit. To attract and retain talent, three main actions are foreseen: (i) seed capital; (ii) career planning and coaching; (iii) incentives for applying for external funding. A focused effort will be implemented to increase funds from private and international sources, and to promote technology transfer and valorization. Cooperation with industry will be fostered through key contacts. The vision, the objectives, and the implementation plan will place i4HB at the forefront.
