A recent review by Isabel Sá-Correia, Mónica Fernandes, and Madalena Matos explores the ecological and biotechnological significance of yeasts associated with microalgal cultures in marine ecosystems.
The study examines how yeast–microalgae cross-kingdom interactions can improve culture robustness, enhance nutrient cycling, and support stress resistance in marine bioprocesses.
These insights may help optimize microalgal cultivation for applications in nutrition, pharmaceuticals, and environmental sustainability.
The research was supported by the “Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul” project, funded through NextGenerationEU and PRR – Recuperar Portugal.
The work contributes to growing interest in microbial ecosystem engineering and the development of circular bioeconomy strategies for sustainable biotechnology.
