Our researchers took part in this year’s European Researchers’ Night (ERN 2024) with a series of demonstrations held at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento and the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC) in Lisbon.

iBB researchers presented a variety of projects that highlighted the institute’s contributions to biotechnology, food technology, and public health. Among the featured activities were:

  • 3D Bioprinting of Fish Fillets: PhD and MSc students from the CleanFish and FEASTS projects led an interactive session titled “Um peixe bem impresso, por favor,” where they showcased 3D bioprinting as a sustainable alternative to traditional fish production. This demonstration motivated very dynamic discussions on the future of food production and sustainability.
  • Gene Therapy and Plasmid DNA Production: Visitors explored plasmid DNA production and its role in mRNA vaccine development through an interactive Lego vaccine factory. The exhibit, part of the DIG4BIO project, provided a hands-on experience of complex scientific processes in an accessible and fun way.
  • Magnetic Fluorescent Microparticles: At MUHNAC, participants learned about the use of these innovative particles in developing latent fingerprints, offering a unique view into the application of bioengineering in forensic science.
  • Sunscreens Explained: A demonstration on how sunscreens work and their importance for skin protection, making complex concepts understandable for the general public.
  • Antibiotic Resistance Awareness: Researchers raised critical awareness about the global issue of antibiotic resistance and its impact on public health, emphasizing the need for responsible antibiotic use.
  • Bioengineering and the Circular Economy: iBB also showcased how bioengineering can support the circular economy and promote sustainable practices.

These activities allowed iBB to engage with the community, inspire future researchers, and demonstrate how science can address global challenges. Special thanks to all the participants and researchers who contributed to the success of this event!
