Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most prevalent skin malignancy worldwide. While surgical resection, chemotherapy, and topical treatments remain the standard therapeutic practices, these approaches often have limited benefits. Patients frequently experience recurrence and side effects, making SCC cases particularly challenging to manage.

In this new publication, Pedro Fonte proposes a novel approach to skin cancer therapy, achieved through a collaboration between iBB (Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences) of the University of Lisbon, CCMAR (Centre for Marine Sciences) of the University of Algarve in Portugal, Yale University in the USA, and the National University of Sciences and Technology in Pakistan. This innovative research has the potential to significantly enhance current skin cancer treatments.

Research Highlights

  • Innovative Drug Delivery System: The team developed a novel nano drug delivery system (NDDS) utilizing functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (FMSNs) to deliver Camptothecin (CPT), a potent anti-cancer drug.
  • Enhanced Stability and Bioadhesion: The FMSNs, coated with chitosan (CS), demonstrated improved stability and bioadhesion, ensuring a sustained and pH-dependent release of CPT, which is crucial for targeted skin cancer therapy.
