New Genome, New Insights: Genome Sequence of Coral Symbiont Roseobacter sp. EG26 Sheds Light on Host Adaptation

A new article published in the ASM journal Microbiology Resource Announcements reports the genome sequence of the marine bacterium Roseobacter sp. EG26, isolated from the octocoral Eunicella gazella off the coast of Portugal.

The study reveals enriched genomic features, including type II, III, IV, and VI secretion systems, ankyrin-repeat proteins, and taurine degradation pathways, suggesting an adaptation to a host-associated lifestyle. In addition, the strain contains the genomic blueprint for the biosynthesis of vitamins B1, B6, B7, B9, and B12.

The strain is preserved at Técnico’s MicroEcoEvoCC, an extensive and well-curated marine bacterial culture collection integrated into the Portuguese Blue Biobank (Biobanco Azul Português). The genome of strain EG26 was assembled and analysed by Selene Moura Madureira as part of her MSc thesis, and the work was led by iBB/Departamento de Bioengenharia researchers Tina Keller-Costa and Rodrigo Costa.
