In 1683, Anton van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch merchant with no formal education or wealth, wrote to the Royal Society of London to share his groundbreaking discovery—the first recorded observation of unicellular organisms.
This significant event is the reason why International Microorganism Day is celebrated on September 17th, with the goal of raising awareness among young people and the general public about the critical role microorganisms play in health, the environment, industry, the economy, and overall quality of life.
Since 2017, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) has actively participated in the global celebrations, organizing various events such as open labs, lectures for high school and university students, courses for high school teachers, and exhibitions where visitors can engage in hands-on experiments and taste microbiologically produced foods. These activities feature contributions from scientists, professors, and graduate students from around the world who specialize in Microbiology.
This year will be no exception! On September 17th, IST will host the 2024 International Microorganism Day celebration with the “Microbiology Route,” a dynamic event featuring various exhibitions, experiments, and games focused on the significance of microorganisms.
