Expertise: Yeast biology and Physiology; Genomics; Pathway prospection; anti-Candida therapies
Short Bio:
Nuno Mira obtained his PhD in Biotechnology and Biosciences in 2008. In 2011 he was appointed Assistant Professor and in 2022 Associate Professor, both positions at the Dept. of Bioengineering at IST. Mira’s team uses genomics-oriented approaches to develop new biotechnological applications centred in Yeasts including: i) engineering of robust industrial Yeast strains to produce high economic value bulk chemicals of interest (e.g. bio-flavourants or carboxylic acids) including “new-to-nature” molecules for which computation-assisted synthetic pathways had to be designed; ii) development of new anti-Candida treatments using knowledge-based approaches, with emphasis on those based on lactobacilii species indigenous to the human microbiome
