iBB Group: bsrg
Expertise: Microbiology, Genomics, Secondary metabolism, chitin, Blue Circular Economy
Short Bio:
João Almeida is a dedicated PhD student at iBB, guided by the expertise of researcher Tina Keller-Costa and Professor Rodrigo Costa. With an undergraduate degree in Biology from Instituto Superior de Agronomia and a Masters in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Faculdade de Ciencias da Universidade de Lisboa, João is currently immersed in the Biotechnology and Biosciences PhD program at Instituto Superior Técnico. His recent work involves characterizing a groundbreaking marine bacteria-borne chitinase, and his Doctoral plan will attempt to unravel the intricate connection between chitin catabolism and secondary metabolism in marine bacteria
Research Focus:
Understanding the relationship and regulation between the catabolism of chitin and activation of secondary metabolism pathways in marine bacteria
