Expertise: Fermentation, Circular economy, Bioentrepreneurship, Formulation development.
Short Bio:
Joana Almeida is a PhD student in bioengineering. With a Master in Biotechnology from IST (2023), Joana works with non-conventional yeasts for the production of biosurfactants. Currently she is studying the utilization of alternative substrates, such as fish oil residues, as fermentation carbon sources to produce biosurfactants, also, she is exploring the biosurfactants' functionalities and learning how to formulate cosmetic products using these eco-friendly compounds. Joana is also interested in bioentrepreneurship, making an effort to bring those molecules to the market.
Research Focus:
Biosurfactants production from renewable and alternative resources and their application in cosmetic formulations.
