Expertise: AI-driven, Design for AM, Manufacturing technologies, Project Design, 3D Bioprinting
Short Bio:
Afonso Gusmão, a mechanical engineering PhD student at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, specialises in product design and 3D bioprinting. He holds an integrated master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (2022) and has developed a low-cost extrusion 3D bioprinter. As an assistant researcher, he contributed to a cellular agriculture project at IST and began his PhD in October 2023 in joint programme between iBB and IDMEC. Afonso has been awarded three times, notably with the Júlio Montalvão e Silva prize. His PhD combines 3D bioprinting with cryopreservation, aiming to create an AI-controlled apparatus for in situ cryopreservation of scaffolds, exploring their post-manufacture applications and mechanical characteristics.
