The Maria de Sousa Award honors the physician and researcher, in a partnership between the Bial Foundation and the University of Lisbon. It aims to financially support five researchers under the age of 35, in research projects in the Health Sciences, and must include an internship at an International Center of Excellence.
In the 2024 Edition the PhD student Maria Arez is one of the five winners, for her research in epigenetics and stem cells.
Maria´s research addresses errors that can occur in the regions regulated by parental imprinting, a mechanism essential for proper gene expression. Understanding and correcting these errors is crucial to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of stem cell-based therapies.
With this award, Maria will conduct an internship at the CNRS, Epigenetics and Cell Fate Centre, Université Paris Cité, and aims to establish her own research line in the future.
