Professor Isabel Sá-Correia, Emeritus Professor of the Department of Bioengineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, has been elected Secretary-General and Secretary of the Sciences Class of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences for the 2025–2026 biennium. By virtue of her role, the founder of the Biological Sciences field within the Department will also become a member of the Scientific Council. The former President of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology will now lead the General Secretariat of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, among other responsibilities associated with the institution’s operations.

After earning a degree in Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico in 1975, she completed her Ph.D. at the same institution in 1984 with a thesis on Yeast Physiology, which resulted in Técnico’s first patent. As a Fulbright Scholar, she pursued postdoctoral studies in Bacterial Molecular Biology at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1985/86. She obtained her Habilitation in 1992 at Técnico. In 2023, she delivered her final lecture on biological sciences at Técnico and was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor by the University of Lisbon in 2024.
