Brussels, May 2025
Frederico Ferreira, Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and researcher at the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), participated in the European High-Level Conference on Biosolutions 2025, a key event shaping the future of biotechnology in Europe. As coordinator of the EU-funded project FEASTS, Prof. Ferreira contributed to strategic discussions around the forthcoming European Biotech Act, currently under preparation by the European Commission.
During the conference, which brought together EU policymakers, scientists, and industry leaders, Prof. Ferreira raised a crucial question:
“Will Food Biotechnology be part of it?”
This intervention highlighted the need to recognize food biotechnology as a central pillar in the EU’s efforts to build sustainable and resilient food systems. With Europe aiming to lead in bio-based innovation, the integration of food biotechnology into future policy frameworks could play a transformative role in advancing climate-smart food production, reducing waste, and supporting healthier diets.
The FEASTS project – Fostering European Cellular Agriculture for Sustainable Transition Solutions – reflects this vision by developing sustainable alternatives to meat and fish, aligning with EU goals for food system transformation.
As Europe prepares for a new era in biotech policy, voices like Prof. Ferreira’s emphasize the importance of inclusive and forward-thinking legislation that supports innovation across sectors.
A bio-based future for Europe must include food.
