Expanding Horizons with BIONET: Manufacturing of Extracellular Vesicles https://ibb.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/12735/ Sun, 16 Jun 2024 09:01:50 +0000 https://groups.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/ibb/?p=12735

iBB established a collaboration with BIONET, a Spanish Bioprocessing Equipment & Software Manufacturer, to explore new frontiers in Cell Therapy production.

Known for their expertise in bioreactors used primarily for bacterial bioprocesses, BIONET approached us considering our expertise in stem cell technology.

The F0-BABY Stirred Tank Reactor and respective software – Rosita- provided by BIONET were installed at iBB and together we designed a process for producing Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) and their Extracellular Vesicles (EVs).

Two different feeding operation modes were tested and compared: fed-batch and fed-batch combined with continuous operation.

Our efforts led to the successful production of large quantities of MSCs and derived EVs, surpassing initial expectations.

This collaboration allowed BIONET to expand their bioreactor applications into the Cell Therapy market and enabled us to showcase our expertise in manufacturing of MSC-based therapeutics.

The project was supported by the CELLS4ALL H2020-INNOVOUCHER-2018-0039 program and resulted in a scientific publication in a reference journal in the field of bioengineering (https://doi.org/10.1002/bit.28449).

This project highlights how collaboration and innovation can drive development and open new opportunities.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with BIONET.
