Our PhD students João Almeida and Ana Fernandes won Best Oral presentation Awards in the ‘Environmental Microbiology’ category at the Portuguese and Brazilian Microbiologia 2024 online conference held on November 25th-27th, 2024.

The event was organized by the Portuguese Society for Microbiology (SPM) and the Brazilian Society for Microbiology (SBM), providing a stimulating platform for Early Career Researchers to share their knowledge.

João Almeida, supervised by Tina Keller-Costa and Rodrigo Costa, received the SPM Young Scientist Award for his presentation on “Heterologous expression and characterization of novel chitinases from uncultivable Endozoicomonadaceae symbionts of octocorals”. The work presented by João was also co-supervised by Ângela Taipa in the framework of the FCT-funded project ChiCoBionts.

Ana Fernandes, supervised by Rodrigo Costa and Teresa Cesario, was honoured with the Microbiology 2024 Award for her short talk on “Bioplastic production capacity in bacteria associated with marine hosts”.

Congratulations Ana & João!
